Conversion tracking, done properly

Smart bidding is only as smart as the data you feed it. Get the tracking wrong and you are optimising confidently toward the wrong thing.

The short version
  • Automated bidding makes thousands of decisions from your conversion data. If that data is wrong, it scales the mistake at speed.
  • Double-counted, missing or mistimed conversions quietly teach the algorithm to chase the wrong customers.
  • Clean, server-side, value-aware tracking is the unglamorous foundation everything else stands on.

Confident garbage out

Modern bidding hands the steering wheel to a machine that trusts your conversion data completely. It does not sense-check it. If your tracking says a certain kind of click leads to sales, the algorithm will go and buy more of those clicks, hard, whether or not the sales were ever real.

That is what makes broken tracking so dangerous. It does not just give you a wrong report. It actively trains the system to spend your budget in the wrong places, and it does so faster than any human could.

The usual ways tracking lies

Conversions get counted twice when two tags fire on the same purchase. They go missing when consent banners or mobile browsers block the tag. They arrive with the wrong value when every sale is logged as the same amount regardless of basket size. And they get polluted by your own team testing the checkout. Each of these quietly bends the data the algorithm learns from.

What good actually looks like

Good tracking is deliberate. One source of truth, server-side where it matters so the data survives browser restrictions, and real values attached to real actions so the platform knows a big order from a small one.

You cannot optimise what you cannot measure, and you should not scale what you cannot trust.

Why the boring work pays

Nobody gets excited about tagging. But it is the single highest-leverage thing in most underperforming accounts, because everything downstream inherits its mistakes. Fix the measurement and the same budget suddenly starts finding better customers, without you touching a single bid.
